Common questions about Euro 7 automotive seals

What Automotive Seals Do You Need to Watch?

NIYOK is a rubber sealing component manufacturer with more than 40 years of experience in automotive and motorcycle sealing applications. We supply valve stem seals, power steering seals, transmission seals and a wide range of engine-related seals, and we are certified to both IATF 16949 and ISO 9001. NIYOK helps automakers and Tier 1 suppliers meet the durability requirements of the Euro 7 era.

The EU Euro 7 regulation (Regulation (EU) 2024/1257) was published in the Official Journal of the European Union in May 2024. For the first time, it extends emission control beyond tailpipe emissions to include brake particle emissions and electric-vehicle battery durability, and it requires vehicles to remain within emission limits throughout their entire lifetime. New light-duty vehicle types must comply in phases from November 2026. For the sealing supply chain, this means that passing inspection at the factory is no longer enough: seals must maintain low leakage and low aging across a service life of several hundred thousand kilometers, and durability validation requirements for components are rising across the board.

Q1. Why does Euro 7 raise the requirements for seals?

The biggest difference between Euro 7 and earlier regulations is that the emission compliance period is extended across the vehicle's entire lifetime, and authorities can carry out in-service testing during the use phase. When a seal ages prematurely, the effect can appear directly in emission and energy-consumption data. The following three situations are the most common. They often surface only after the vehicle has accumulated mileage, which is exactly what automakers and Tier 1 suppliers do not want to see in the field:

1. When the lip of a valve stem seal wears or hardens, more oil enters the combustion chamber. Oil consumption rises, and particulate and hydrocarbon emissions worsen. This is one of the most direct causes of emission exceedance during the use phase.
2. When a transmission seal lacks sufficient heat and oil resistance, it loses elasticity under rising oil temperatures and chemical attack from gear-oil additives. Leakage reduces lubrication efficiency and increases transmission loss, which indirectly affects overall vehicle energy consumption.
3. When a power steering seal has excessive compression set under high-pressure dynamic loads, it loses resilience. Hydraulic efficiency then drops and system load increases, which also raises overall energy consumption. (For the relevant test standards, see the "pre-production validation tests" section below.)

All three types of problems can be eliminated before mass production through material selection assessment, sample testing and durability validation. NIYOK provides material selection assessment and sample testing services. The standard sample lead time is about 7 working days (actual timing depends on the project), and test reports can be issued at the sample stage for engineering confirmation.

Q2. Which key validation tests must Euro 7-era powertrain seals pass before mass production?

Before entering mass production, powertrain seals generally need to complete the following five core validation tests to support the component durability validation process of automakers and Tier 1 suppliers:

1. Heat aging test (ASTM D573 / ISO 188), which simulates the long-term high-temperature environment of the engine bay and transmission and confirms that the change in hardness and tensile properties of the rubber stays within acceptance limits over the target service life.
2. Fluid immersion test (ASTM D471 / ISO 1817), which immerses the material in the actual engine oil, transmission fluid or power steering fluid to evaluate the change in volume and hardness and confirm compatibility between the material and the medium, avoiding swelling or extraction degradation.
3. Compression set test (ASTM D395 Method B / ISO 815), which simulates the long-term compressed state of the seal and evaluates whether the recovery is sufficient to maintain the minimum sealing pressure. This is the quantitative basis for the loss of resilience in the power steering seal described under the failure causes above. Once compression set exceeds the limit, the interface can no longer maintain stable sealing pressure after temperature cycling.
4. Low-temperature performance test (ASTM D1329 TR-10), which confirms that the seal retains enough elasticity under cold-start conditions in cold climates to avoid low-temperature leakage.
5. Rotary shaft lip seal durability test (ISO 6194 / DIN 3760, 3761), which simulates long-duration operation under actual speed, temperature and eccentricity conditions and verifies that lip wear and leakage stay within specification over the target service life.

NIYOK holds dual quality certifications, IATF 16949 and ISO 9001. We can provide complete test planning recommendations according to customer needs and support PPAP production part approval documents, 8D problem analysis reports and CAPA corrective action documents, supplying the component test documentation and quality records required for vehicle validation.

Practical information that procurement teams often ask about, such as minimum order quantity (MOQ), production lead time and small-batch sampling arrangements, is handled flexibly according to actual project needs and specifications. You are welcome to contact the NIYOK technical team to confirm.
